Is the diffuser difficult to assemble?
No. It assembles and packs away in seconds, not minutes.
Stored, it folds down to roughly 30 by 8 centimeters, small enough to slide into most camera bags without a fight. We built it this way on purpose. Macro subjects don't wait around while you wrestle with gear, so your setup shouldn't either.
How long does it take to make my diffuser?
Every ProMacro Custom Diffuser is made to order, not pulled off a shelf. We produce in small batches so each unit gets real attention before it ships to you.
Making it to order means a short wait before your diffuser leaves our hands. This takes no longer than 7 working days. It also means the fit is guaranteed correct for your exact gear, with nothing generic and nothing approximate. That tradeoff is worth it once you see how the light falls on your first shot.
Do I even need a diffuser?
Probably, yes, if you're shooting with flash. Here's why.
Macro lenses have a very shallow depth of field. To get more of your subject in focus, you need a small aperture, something like f/11. A small aperture blocks a lot of light, and macro lenses already gather less light than standard lenses because they're so close to the subject. Add those two problems together and you're usually short on light no matter how good the sun is that day.
That's where flash comes in. But direct flash is harsh. It throws hard shadows and blown-out highlights, especially on shiny or reflective subjects like beetles or wet leaves. A diffuser spreads that light out and scatters its direction before it reaches your subject, so it bounces back to your lens from many angles instead of one direct blast.
The result is what photographers call soft light. Shadows lift, highlights calm down, and fine detail that a bare flash would've wiped out stays visible in the frame. If you're shooting handheld macro with flash, a diffuser isn't a luxury add-on. It's part of what makes the shot work.
